zFestival Arts is Reinventing Arts Education and Collaboration in a Virtual Environment

zFestival Arts has filled a recent need for low-cost music and art collaboration focused on technological empowerment. They are now launching a fall program — zFestival unAcademy — to show that art made in a virtual environment is here to stay.

zFestival launches the unAcademy, first ever fall session

(September 2, 2020)–Applications are open now for the unAcademy, the newest project of virtual new music festival zFestival. The unAcademy is a 7-week intensive beginning October 1, 2020, with a final presentation of works over the weekend of November 20. Participants will develop technological skills and artistic inspiration through a combination of weekly seminars; workshops and discussions led by guest artists; and collaboration with peers to produce two separate multimedia projects. Please email zfestival@zfestival.org if interested in applying; applicants will be notified about acceptance by September 14.

The goal of the unAcademy is to empower contemporary artists to create collaborative and interdisciplinary art virtually. Applications are welcomed without prerequisites: the unAcademy seeks creative risk-takers striving for a deeper understanding of art-making in a digital space, and aims to be accessible to any such artist. The unAcademy’s structure is based on the principle that community-based skill sharing can be even more educational and inspiring than a standard lecture format alone; and that the digital-collaboration format is less an obstacle than an opportunity for new creative outlets.

The unAcademy project builds on the success of the first season of zFestival, which took place during the month of July 2020 under the leadership of Co-Artistic Directors Peter Traver and Shoshana Klein. zFestival featured 92 participants, including composers, audio engineers, and performers, and produced 32 world premieres over the course of two final gala days. All participants took part tuition-free.

To continue our low cost model for the unAcademy, the zFestival team has launched a fundraiser available via https://fundraising.fracturedatlas.org/zfestival/. All proceeds from this campaign will go directly to lowering tuition costs for our participants. With the world economy hurting, and many artists out of jobs, zFest believes little or no tuition is the only way to continue giving artists space to create during these times. They appreciate any and all support you can give.
