The National Flute Association (NFA) was founded in 1972 as a common ground for flutists to exchange ideas and inspiration and has expanded in the decades since to include a quarterly magazine, an annual convention, and a dynamic assortment of scholarship programs, commissions, and member-driven initiatives. Approximately 3,000 people from all 50 states and more than 30 countries are NFA members, including leading soloists, orchestral players, jazz and world music performers, teachers, adult amateurs, and students of all ages. With 24 committees and over 80 volunteers and appointees, the NFA finds its heartbeat in its members, who keep the gears turning at full speed with their passion and limitless supply of ideas. The NFA values and celebrates the contributions of all its stakeholders and is committed to growing as a diverse and equitable organization.

Reporting to the NFA Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for the development and stewardship of the organization’s strategic vision. Informed by this vision, the Executive Director creates an annual work plan and operates within a board-approved balanced budget. The Executive Director is responsible for the management, coordination, and supervision of the overall day-to-day operations and the staff.

For its next Executive Director, the National Flute Association is looking for an individual who has proven experience in key strategic and operational areas, including:

Commitment to Diversity, Inclusion, & Equity
This person will have experience addressing organizational needs with emphasis on diversity, inclusion, and equity, with an understanding of how to include underserved communities by providing meaningful content/events for the global NFA community.

Live Convention and Virtual Event Planning
This person will be familiar with online event platforms and able to lead innovative digital online programming for our members. Ideally, this will include the ability to multi-task by developing virtual NFA components outside of the box of traditional convention programming.

Organizational Strategic Leadership
Additionally, this person will have the ability to implement vision and growth strategies that result in increased revenues and achieve the organizational goals of expanding membership, strengthening partnerships with outside organizations, and continuing organizational and professional development to ensure the NFA’s fiscal health and sustainability.

Qualification Requirements

  • BA/BS/BM required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Significant experience in a managerial role of both staff and volunteers with a demonstrated record of success. Non-profit business experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of current best practices in non-profit governance.
  • Proficiency in establishing and following a budget combined with a strong understanding of financial data and ability to navigate overview and detail management.
  • Demonstrated success in developing new revenue models and ensuring long-term organizational sustainability.
  • Experience in event management and venue contract negotiations, such as a major annual convention; publications management; associations and membership programs.
  • Proven success in fundraising and building relationships with members.
  • Strong ability to distill a breadth of information into an actionable plan, provide organizational clarity, and manage projects to successful completion.
  • Familiarity with music-centered nonprofits and performing artists preferred.

Duties will include:
Management and Financial Administration: The Executive Director has the responsibility to ensure effective office management, financial management, record-keeping, and management of equipment and software. The Executive Director manages the organization’s finances, working with external consultants on endowment and operating investments, and regularly reports to the Board of Directors on all significant financial matters. The Executive Director also facilitates an independent annual audit.

Employment and Management of Staff:
The Executive Director is authorized to hire, supervise, evaluate, and dismiss the staff of the organization per the approved organizational budget and under current employment laws and NFA Human Resources policies and procedures. The Executive Director is responsible for creating a collaborative and productive work environment in the organization, including timely evaluation and supervision of all employees; development of position descriptions; and compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations. The Executive Director has responsibility for fair and equitable hiring practices in all areas of the organization.

Programs & Events:
The Executive Director has the responsibility to ensure the effective planning and implementation of successful and well-managed events and programs. The Executive Director oversees the membership program, publications, online content, and the annual convention. The Executive Director will oversee additional programs and events as may be added.
Board of Directors: Working with the President of the Board, the Executive Director ensures effective logistical arrangements, communications, record-keeping, and the maintenance of minutes of the Board of Directors meetings and other occasional meetings authorized by the organization. The Executive Director is responsible for providing information to the Board of Directors both formally and informally, so that they are well-informed about developments within and about the organization.

Committee Support:
The Executive Director ensures that all committees of the NFA have adequate staff support and works with volunteer Committee Chairs and other appointees to ensure they stay within the approved organizational budget and are able to serve the organization to meet its needs.

Development and Grant Management:
The Executive Director oversees the research for funding opportunities and is responsible for the drafting of grant applications and special appeals, monitoring development activities, compliance via the filing of narrative and financial reports, and maintaining records for all grants, individual donations, and special projects of the organization. In addition, the Executive Director pursues foundation and corporate funding, special events, and individual solicitations, particularly the development of a planned giving program for the organization under the development policies as defined by the Board of Directors.

Organizational Representation:
The Executive Director is the external face of the organization to the general public and represents the mission and concerns of the organization. The Executive Director also advocates and is responsible for representing the organization in those functions that require the input of the organization’s chief executive officer, including funding agencies, professional societies, and governmental organizations. In any circumstances involving the press, the Executive Director is deemed the official spokesperson for the organization unless otherwise deemed appropriate.

Office Location
The current NFA office is in Chicago, Illinois. In consultation with the new ED, office logistics to be considered may include a virtual team with no base office.
