The School of Drama at The New School in NYC is excited to announce the launch of a groundbreaking new graduate program for actors, writers, directors, and multidisciplinary theatre artists.
Launching in Fall 2021 and currently accepting applications, the Master of Fine Arts in Contemporary Theatre and Performance reimagines traditional conservatory training to prepare young artists to thrive as theater-makers in a changed world. We have designed a unique approach to MFA-level training where devising, multidisciplinary collaboration, and performance take center stage.
This new MFA is an ideal program for artists who seek to deepen their existing practice while adding breadth and an interdisciplinary approach to their artistry. These students will develop their own projects, experiment within secondary and tertiary disciplines, work in new genres, engage in rich collaboration, and utilize new creative technologies and multimedia design.
True to the core values of The New School, the MFA in Contemporary Theatre and Performance is infused with social purpose from start to end. Our curriculum adopts a citizen-artist approach and helps each student to realize their own agency as an artist in the world. Students train to be leaders, collaborators, and change makers who can harness the potential of the dramatic arts for change by creating and presenting work that is bold, personal, relevant, and socially engaged.
Contemporary Theatre and Performance student might find themselves developing writing under the guidance of Tony Award-winner Stephen Karam, or Drama Desk-winner and Pulitzer finalist Christopher Shinn, exploring approaches to devised theatre through projects led by the award-winning ensembles Elevator Repair Service or Tectonic Theatre Company, or in a physical theatre project led by London-based company Frantic Assembly.
Housed within The New School’s College of Performing Arts (hope to the School of Drama, School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and Mannes School of Music), the MFA draws on the college’s highly progressive approach and its commitment to interdisciplinarity, experimentation, and collaboration.
