Vice President of Artistic Planning, Atlanta Symphony

Work Schedule: The VP of Artistic Planning is a full-time, exempt senior staff position, with variable hours and regular evening and weekend work hours.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  1. Help establish the ASO’s artistic profile through planning seasons and performances.
  • In conjunction with the Executive Director, Music Director, other permanent artistic leadership team members, members of the Board and the senior leadership team, the VP of Artistic Planning casts and develops the overall multi-year artistic strategy of the ASO—to include engagement of artists, repertoire and activities for all classical and semi-classical concerts. In this role, the VP also provides input to, coordinates with, embraces, supports and helps ensure the success of all programs managed by other departments (primarily Education, Operations and ASH Live).
  • Identify, engage, negotiate fees, contract, pay and be responsible for the on-site care of all guest artists (except those being cared for by ASH Live).
  • Cultivate and maintain positive working relationships with artists and artist managements.
  • Lead efforts to diversify ASO’s repertoire, artists, commissioning programs.
  • Continually search for and identify top-level artists, conductors, composers, program concepts and other ideas to keep ASO programming artistically fresh, innovative and in touch with the tastes of Atlanta audiences. Travel as necessary to evaluate or cultivate people and ideas for potential inclusion in the ASO schedule. Solicit ideas and input from ASO Family and Atlanta community members.
  • Coordinate and convene regularly scheduled programming meetings with the Music Director, Executive Director and other senior leadership.
  • Serve as principal artistic liaison between the ASO and recording companies in planning recording repertoire, artists and schedules; collaborate with General Manager in planning and execution of media projects.
  • Support General Manager in coordinating national, in-Georgia (including runouts) and international tours as it relates to programming and scheduling.
  • Manage the ASO’s commissioning program.
  • Provide artistic oversight and supervise the planning of concert programs for education and community engagement programs.
  1. Direct and support the work of the members of the department.
  • Ensure each program or activity is well planned and executed and meets its goals for artistry, impact, attendance, participation, program-related revenue and expenses.
  • Evaluate each activity and ensure it provides strong value to those served, serves the overall goals of the institution, and meets the needs of the community.
  • Restructure team duties as necessary to meet current program needs.
  • Lead, evaluate and inspire the department team. Evaluate strengths and developmental needs and make changes as necessary.
  1. Supervise the ASO’s Talent Development Program and Lead Strategic Development of Programming to Diversify the Pipeline of Talent in the ASO and the Orchestra Field.
  • Provide oversight and strategic direction for ASO’s Talent Development Program. Supervise TDP Manager, other staff and volunteers in meeting program goals.
  • Develop additional training opportunities as part of or in addition to TDP to support the ASO’s strategic goals to diversify the orchestra.
  1. Seek and develop programming in collaboration with other community partners and with fellow Woodruff Arts Center divisions.

5.Engage with the board and other institutional leaders to ensure awareness, appreciation and support of the ASO’s pipeline diversity and artisic programs are maximized.

  • Serve as liaison to and support the ASO’s Artistic Committee and any task forces that may be established specifically related to artistic planning and/or pipeline diversity
  • Serve as primary staff liaison to the Artistic Advisory Committee of the Orchestra.
  • Attend board and executive committee meetings as needed and requested by the Executive Director; provide regular updates and written reports.
  • Ensure general awareness of the ASO’s artistic and pipeline diversity programs and of the impact of these programs.
  1. Administration
  • Consistent with the Master Agreement between the Orchestra and management, in partnership with the Orchestra’s General Manager, maximize the scheduling of orchestra services, season schedules, schedule changes and rehearsal orders.
  • Supervise expense management for artistic and education and community engagement department budgets. Supervise or review drafting, negotiation, justification, management and control of approved expenses.
  • Participate in the development of overall institutional policies and plans with other senior staff and the Executive Director (e.g., negotiating Master Agreement between management team and Orchestra; developing grant proposals, new concert ideas and programs with marketing and development; contributing to creation of a long-range plan for the organization).
  • Review overall department staff structures and staff compensation levels.
  • Participate in the annual budget development and review process.
  • Disseminate personnel policies.
  • Cooperate and provide leadership among peers with the Woodruff Arts Center.
  • Assume other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
  1. Fundraising

Assist in building relationships with key donors and stakeholders to help raise funds for the ASO. Write material for grant applications as necessary.

  1. Operations
  • Serve as Manager on Duty as assigned, with overall responsibility for the performance as well as the safety and enjoyment of the audience.

    Responsibilities include the following:
  • Create accurate and up-to-date position descriptions for all department staff.
  • Create annual work plans and professional development plans for all department staff in keeping with overarching institutional goals.
  • Hold formal, written evaluations of all direct reports annually—more frequently for team members who require performance improvement plans.

Education/Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree required. Advanced degree preferred.
10 or more years of demonstrated success as an arts administrator.

  • Experience in developing repertoire plans and working with conductors.
  • Knowledge of contemporary conductors, instrumental and vocal soloists, composers and other performers.
  • Experience in negotiating artist fees and repertoire.
  • Acute attention to details.
  • Ability to successfully administer many projects, immediate and long-range, simultaneously.
