Costume Shop Assistant and Wardrobe Manager- Part time

Hunter College theatre costume shop is looking for a part-time costume shop assistant and wardrobe manager to work during the upcoming Fall and Spring semesters for 250 hours total each semester.

This person is ideally a recent graduate of a BA, BFA or MFA program with some professional/pre-professional experience in costuming to work with students. The candidate will show students the ins and outs of theatre costuming in consultation with the faculty costume designer.

Typical activities may require training and supervision of actor measurements, hand and machine sewing, basic pattern-making and alterations, shopping/renting, wardrobe and strike paperwork, shop maintenance, dyeing/distressing, and occasional fitting guidance and maintaining shop safety. The candidate will be present in the shop for 10-15 hours during the week of a regular semester for a total of 16 weeks (14 weeks of instruction, 1 week of prep in the beginning and 1 week of wrapping up at the end) paid at $20/hour.

Additionally, the candidate will be present over two weekends including tech and strike, and 2 weeks of evening hours during production runs. The candidate will report to the costume faculty and/or the production manager and department Chair.

The ideal candidate is expected to have strong communication skills and a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Occasional design opportunities, design mentoring, and other teaching/supervising activities may be possible for additional pay. Hunter College is easily accessible with a subway and shop is large and well-lit with easy access to the street.
