Call for applications: MFA in Contemporary Theatre and Performance at The New School

The Contemporary Theatre and Performance MFA at the School of Drama at The New School in NYC reimagines traditional conservatory training to prepare actors, writers, directors, and multidisciplinary artists to thrive as theater-makers in a changed world. The curriculum is designed with a unique approach to MFA-level training where devising, multidisciplinary collaboration, and performance take center stage.
This MFA is ideal for artists who seek to deepen their existing practice while adding breadth and an interdisciplinary approach to their artistry. These students will develop their own projects, experiment within secondary and tertiary disciplines, work in new genres, engage in rich collaboration, and utilize new creative technologies and multimedia design.

True to the core values of The New School, the MFA in Contemporary Theatre and Performance is infused with social purpose from start to end. Our curriculum adopts a citizen-artist approach and helps each student to realize their own agency as an artist in the world. Students train to be leaders, collaborators, and change makers who can harness the potential of the dramatic arts for change by creating and presenting work that is bold, personal, relevant, and socially engaged.

Housed within The New School’s College of Performing Arts (home to the School of Drama, School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and Mannes School of Music), the MFA draws on the college’s highly progressive approach and its commitment to interdisciplinarity, experimentation, and collaboration.
